Maths

At Beecholme we believe that every child can reach their potential and become confident, enthused and successful life-long mathematicians. In line with the new National Curriculum, our maths teaching aims to develop children’s fluency, reasoning and problem solving through the ‘Mastery’ approach. This approach ensures every child is provided the opportunity to deepen their mathematical understanding, make connections between their learning and reason maths through varied and stimulating lessons. Our lessons follow the highly effective CPA (Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract) approach to teaching involving practical resources, varied representations and opportunities for children to communicate mathematically through justifying, proving and explaining their thinking with a focus on mathematical vocabulary.
Wherever possible learning is linked to real –life contexts and enhanced through outdoor learning. To further enhance the teaching of Maths at Beecholme, Maths Meetings allow for consolidation of previous learning, to ensure it is secure and embedded and to introduce new learning in a fun and exciting way. All Beecholme children are taught to have a ‘growth mindset’ in all areas of their learning, to believe in themselves and that mistakes are a natural part of their learning journey.
